Golden Retrievers Rescues - History

Golden Retrievers appeared in the British Isles as crosses of the Flat-coated Retriever and Tweed Water Spaniel, the Newfoundland, as well as some various setters and spaniels. The main function of the breed was to hunt birds on land and in the water. These dogs have a remarkable sense of smell that enables them to track game on the cold trail and detect drugs. Today, these dogs are very popular as pets all over the world. They can also be used as: therapy animals, guides for the blind, and service dogs for the disabled.

Weight: dogs are from 60 to 80 pounds; bitches are from 55 to 70 pounds.
Height: dogs are 22-24 inches at the withers; bitches are 20-22 inches. Deviations of more than one inch shall disqualify.
Life Span: 10-12 years.

Golden Retrievers Rescues - Care

Golden Retrievers are sporting dogs. They are energetic and agile and require a lot of exercise to be in a good form. Their long dense coats shed throughout the year; twice a year these dogs loose their hair almost completely. To keep such a coat in a good condition, daily brushing is necessary.

Professional grooming is recommended every 8 weeks. Golden Retrievers need well-balanced premium food and regular vet checks. Be sure you can afford this dog before buying or adopting it.

Being rather large, these dogs require at least basic obedience training, because otherwise they may be difficult to control. Golden Retrievers are very devoted to the family and cannot serve as kennel dogs or live in the yard on a chain. Golden Retrievers should be members of the family.
